If a coin lands on heads five times in a row, many people assume tails is “due” next. This is known as the gambler’s fallacy – the mistaken belief that past outcomes affect future ones, even when each event is independent. In reality, the odds remain 50/50 every time.

The Illusion of Control

Another psychological trap is the illusion of control. We often feel we can influence random outcomes through our actions – pressing the button on a pokie machine at just the right moment, or choosing our own Lotto numbers. It gives us a sense of agency, but it doesn’t change the odds.

Losses, on the other hand, feel roughly twice as painful as equivalent wins feel good. This imbalance can lead to loss chasing – continuing to play in an attempt to win back what’s been lost. It’s at this point that a harmless pastime can slide into problem gambling.

Randomness Isn’t Fair

One of the biggest misconceptions about luck is the idea that it “balances out” over time. Many players think that after a string of losses, a win must be just around the corner. But randomness has no memory. Each spin, roll, or draw is independent of the last.

Casinos and gaming operators understand this human bias and design games to exploit it. Near-misses, flashing lights, and celebratory sounds create the illusion that you’re “close” to winning – even when the odds haven’t changed at all.

Playing Smart

Understanding probability doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a game. It simply helps you play with awareness. Here are a few simple tips:

  • Know the odds. Learn how the game works and what your real chances of winning are.
  • Set limits. Decide in advance how much time and money you’re willing to spend – and stick to it.
