Poker comes in many forms, but three of the most popular – Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Seven Card Stud – stand out for their unique styles and strategies. Each game uses the same deck and the same goal – to make the best five-card hand – but the rules, pace, and mindset differ. Whether you’re playing at a local pub game in Auckland or online from home, understanding these differences can help you find the version that suits you best.

Texas Hold’em – the modern classic

Texas Hold’em is by far the most widely played poker variant in the world. It’s the format you’ll see in most televised tournaments and local poker leagues across New Zealand. Each player receives two private cards (known as “hole cards”), and five community cards are dealt face up in three stages: the flop, turn, and river.

Your goal is to make the best five-card hand using any combination of your two hole cards and the five community cards. Because everyone shares the same community cards, Hold’em is a game of psychology, timing, and reading your opponents as much as it is about the cards themselves.

Strategically, Hold’em rewards position and observation. With only two private cards, information is limited, so success often depends on how well you can interpret betting patterns and make decisions under pressure.

Omaha – more cards, more action

Omaha looks similar to Texas Hold’em at first glance, but there’s one key difference: each player gets four private cards instead of two. However, you must use exactly two of your own cards and three of the community cards to make your hand.

This rule makes Omaha more complex and often more action-packed. Strong hands like straights and flushes appear more frequently, and pots can grow quickly. That’s why Omaha is often called “action poker”.

The most common version is Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO), where you can only bet up to the size of the current pot. This keeps the game balanced between risk and control. Omaha tends to attract players who enjoy a more mathematical challenge, as there are many more possible combinations to consider.

Seven Card Stud – the traditional challenge

Before Texas Hold’em became the global favourite, Seven Card Stud was the dominant poker game. Unlike Hold’em and Omaha, there are no community cards. Instead, each player receives seven cards – some face up for everyone to see, and some face down.

The game starts with two hidden cards and one face-up card, followed by several more rounds of dealing until each player has seven cards. The best five-card hand wins.

Seven Card Stud demands memory and focus. You need to keep track of which cards are visible and which have already been folded. Because there’s less bluffing and more open information, Stud rewards careful observation and patience rather than flashy moves.

Which game suits you best?

Choosing between Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Seven Card Stud depends on your personality and playing style.

  • Texas Hold’em is ideal if you enjoy fast-paced games with a strong psychological element.
  • Omaha is perfect for players who love big pots, complex decisions, and plenty of action.
  • Seven Card Stud appeals to those who prefer a slower, more traditional game that rewards discipline and memory.

If you’re new to poker, start with Texas Hold’em – it’s easy to learn and widely available in New Zealand’s casinos and online platforms. Once you’re comfortable, try Omaha for a more dynamic experience or Stud for a classic, thoughtful challenge.

The common thread in poker

No matter which version you play, poker is ultimately about making smart decisions with limited information. You’re not just playing the cards – you’re playing the people. That’s what makes poker timeless and endlessly fascinating.

So next time you sit down at the table, consider trying a new variant. You might discover that a small change in the rules completely transforms the game – and perhaps find your new favourite among these three poker classics.
